BPJS is a government-mandated program for all Indonesian citizens, providing universal social security encompassing healthcare, pensions, worker’s compensation, and death benefits. Is BPJS mandatory for foreigners?

Yes, it is mandatory for foreigners working in Bali and Indonesia for longer than 6 months, specifically work KITAS and KITAP holders.

To apply for either BPJS Kesehatan or BPJS Ketenagakerjaan, you must stay in Indonesia for at least 6 months.

Technically, the employer and employee pay for the insurance with a specific bracket for each program1:

  • Work Accident Insurance: 0.24% (paid by employer)
  • Old Age Security: 3.7% (paid by employer), 2% (paid by employee)
  • Pension Security: 2% (paid by employer), 1% (paid by employee)
  • Death Insurance: 0.3% (paid by employer)
