Foreigners residing in Indonesia using a temporary residence permit (KITAS) or permanent residence permit (KITAP) are entitled to a driving license. Also known as Surat Izin Mengemudi (SIM). Other basic requirements for this license application in Indonesia include passing both practical and theoretical tests and being 17 years of age or older.
Local Driver License (SIM)
- Eligibility: Indonesian citizens
- Types of Licenses Available: SIM A (cars < 3,500 kg), SIM B1, SIM B2, SIM C (motorcycles)
- Application Process: Requires passing theoretical and practical tests
- Documentation Required: National ID, health certificate, application form
- Language of Tests: Indonesian language
- Validity: Generally valid for 5 years
- International Driving Permit: Not required for local residents
- Conversion of Foreign License: Not applicable
- Driving Regulations: Same as those applicable to all drivers in Indonesia
Foreigner Driver License
- Eligibility: Foreigners with a KITAS (temporary stay permit) or KITAP (permanent stay permit)
- Types of Licenses Available: SIM A (cars < 3,500 kg), SIM C (motorcycles)
- Application Process: Requires passing theoretical and practical tests
- Documentation Required: Passport, KITAS/KITAP, health certificate, original foreign license if applicable
- Language of Tests: Indonesian language; assistance may be needed for translation
- Validity: Valid for 1 year from the date of issuance
- International Driving Permit: Recommended for tourists; must accompany home country license
- Conversion of Foreign License: Possible to convert foreign license to local SIM under certain conditions
- Driving Regulations: Must adhere to local driving laws; cannot drive solely on foreign license
What are the Types of Driving Licenses in Indonesia
Eight different types of classes for driving licenses exist, each made for individuals to operate various vehicles. Driver’s licenses will be valid for one year from the date of issuance. The table below shows the Foreign Driver Licenses in Indonesia.
License Types
- A: Drive a private passenger car or cargo vehicle weighing no more than 3,500 kg.
- A public: Operate commercial vehicles and delivery trucks up to 3,500 kg.
- B1: Operate vehicles exceeding 3,500 kg, including passenger cars and cargo trucks.
- B1 Public: Commercial passenger vehicles and general freight with a maximum allowable weight exceeding 3,500 kg
- B2: Private heavy equipment vehicles, towing vehicles, or motor vehicles with semi-trailers or individual trailers with maximum allowable weight exceeding 1,000 kg trailer/s
- B2 Public: Commercial vehicles for towing with semi-trailers or individual trailers with a maximum allowable weight exceeding 1,000 kg trailer/s
- C: Drive motorcycles (two-wheeled motor vehicles)
- D: Drive a special vehicle for a disabled person
