The Government of South Korea has announced a new tourism stimulus policy that includes visa-free entry for Indonesian citizens, marking a significant development for outbound travelers and regional mobility.
The policy was introduced during the 11th National Tourism Strategy Meeting led by President Lee Jae Myung on 25 February 2026. The initiative forms part of South Korea’s broader ambition to reach 30 million international visitors, following a record 18.9 million arrivals in 2025, a 15% increase from the previous year.
Visa-Free Entry, With Specific Requirements
While the announcement has generated enthusiasm, the visa exemption is not universally applicable.
The visa-free facility for Indonesian passport holders is currently being introduced as a trial scheme for group tourists only, with a minimum of three travelers per group. Individual travelers are not yet eligible under this program.
In parallel, South Korea is also expanding its multi-entry visa policy. Chinese and Southeast Asian nationals who have previously visited Korea may qualify for a five-year multiple-entry visa, while residents of major metropolitan cities in those countries may apply for a 10-year visa.
Additionally, automated immigration gates, previously limited to 18 countries including Japan and Singapore, will now be expanded to all European Union member states.
A Strategic Tourism Overhaul
Beyond visa facilitation, Seoul is implementing structural reforms to improve visitor experience and decentralize tourism away from the capital.
Key measures include:
- Expansion of direct international routes to regional airports
- Incentives and reduced airport fees to encourage new routes
- Additional late-night airport buses to Chungcheong and Gangwon provinces
- Extended advance booking windows for KTX high-speed rail
- Adoption of Spain’s “parador” model by transforming traditional houses and temples into premium accommodations
The government has also introduced a zero-tolerance policy against price gouging, particularly in peak destinations like Jeju Island. Businesses found to be inflating prices or failing to display transparent pricing may face operational suspension.
What This Means for Indonesian Travelers
For Indonesian tourists, this development signals growing bilateral travel opportunities. However, compliance with entry conditions remains essential, particularly regarding group travel requirements.
As South Korea positions tourism as a core national growth engine, Indonesian travelers, whether for leisure or business, may find increasing access and improved infrastructure in the years leading to the “Visit Korea Year” campaign (2027–2029).
For businesses and frequent travelers navigating visa categories, travel compliance, or cross-border expansion, professional advisory support remains critical to ensure seamless international mobility.
