Visa United Kingdom (UK)

UK Transit Visa

If you’re passing through a UK airport on your way to another country, this is known as ‘transiting’—often referred to as a ‘layover.’

Types of Transit in the UK

  • There are two types of transit:Airside Transit – You do not go through UK border control before boarding your next flight.
  • Landside Transit – You pass through UK border control, usually to check in luggage or switch airports, but must leave the UK within a short period (typically 24 hours).

To ensure a smooth transit experience, securing the correct UK Transit Visa is essential.

At LMI Consultancy, our visa specialists provide expert guidance for a fast, efficient, and fully compliant UK Transit Visa application. Whether you’re travelling for leisure, business, family visits, or official engagements, we handle the complexities so you can travel with confidence.

What is UK Transit Visa and who is it for?

A Transit Visa is required if you are changing flights in the UK on your way to another country, passing through UK border control (for example, to collect and recheck baggage), or leaving the UK within 48 hours without working or studying. Once you depart the UK, your Transit Visa is automatically revoked, regardless of its stated validity.

Who Needs a Transit Visa for the UK?

Indonesian passport holders may need a transit visa for the UK if they are passing through a UK airport on their way to another country and do not meet the exemption criteria set by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). You will likely need a UK Transit Visa if:

  • You are changing airports in the UK.
  • Your layover is more than 24 hours.
  • You need to go through UK border control (even briefly).
  • You do not hold a valid visa or residence permit from certain approved countries, such as the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or an EU/EEA member state.

Travellers should check if they qualify for a Transit Without Visa (TWOV) exception before applying. When in doubt, it is advisable to apply to avoid being denied boarding or entry.

Types of Transit Visa for the UK

There are two main types of UK transit visas available for Indonesian travellers, depending on the nature of your stopover:

Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV):

For travellers not passing through UK border control and who are changing flights within the same airport.

Valid only for airside transit and typically under 24 hours.

You must have confirmed onward flight tickets.

Visitor in Transit Visa:

For travellers who need to pass through UK border control, change airports, or have an extended layover.

Valid for a maximum of 48 hours.

Required if you’re leaving the airport or going to a different terminal or city.

Both types require an online application, proof of your final destination, valid visas for that destination (if needed), and evidence of your travel itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Direct Airside Transit Visa if I just want to pass through the UK?

If you’re simply connecting flights and not passing through UK border control, you may need to apply for a transit visa, specifically a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV). This applies even if you’re not leaving the airport. Whether you need one depends on your nationality and travel history. If you plan to transit through the UK, check if you’re eligible to pass through the UK without a visa, or if you’ll require a transit visa.

What is a Visitor in Transit Visa, and when is it used to transit to another country?

The Visitor in Transit Visa is intended for travellers who need to pass through the UK and go through border control UK en route to another country. If you’re transiting to another country and have a layover in the UK longer than 24 hours or need to change airports, you will require a transit visa. In certain cases, you may need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) instead, depending on your nationality.

I frequently pass through the UK. Can I do that without a visa?

Even if you frequently pass through the UK, you may require a transit visa depending on your passport and travel circumstances. Some travellers may be eligible to transit through the UK without a visa, but others may need an ETA or a specific transit visa. A transit visa allows you to legally change planes or airports within the UK en route to your final destination.

I want to stay in the UK for tourism. Can I use a transit visa?

No, a transit visa does not allow you to enter the UK as a tourist. If you plan to stay for sightseeing, visiting friends or family, or short business trips, you must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead. A valid visa for transit does not permit you to explore or remain in the UK. For leisure or extended visits, always apply for a Standard Visitor Visa.

Where can I apply for a UK transit visa in Jakarta?

You can apply for a UK transit visa in Jakarta through the official Visa Application Centre. There are different types of transit visas, including the Direct Airside Transit Visa and Visitor in Transit Visa. Check your eligibility before applying. Processing times vary, so it’s advised to apply well in advance. If you’re unsure whether you require a visa, consult the UK government’s official guidelines.

If you’re unsure whether you require a visa, LMI Consultancy can assist you in preparing the correct documents and guiding you through the process smoothly.

How much does a UK transit visa cost according to the UK government?

The UK government sets the visa application fee based on the visa types and travel purpose. If you plan to travel through the UK, you may need to apply for either a Direct Airside or Visitor in Transit Visa.

Should you need a visa to come to UK, make sure to check the most recent fee structure on the official GOV.UK website or consult with a visa consultant like LMI Consultancy to avoid delays.
