BPJS Registration in Indonesia

The role of BPJS for expatriates has been heavily debated, mainly because many expats don’t understand its personal advantages. However, Indonesian residents who have lived in the country for at least six months must now comply with this regulation.
BPJS is a government-mandated program for all Indonesian citizens, providing universal social security encompassing healthcare, pensions, worker’s compensation, and death benefits. This social security package aims to ensure workers maintain a decent standard of living, providing financial support during periods of income loss due to workplace injury, aging, retirement, or death, offering a safety net for life’s inevitable challenges.
BPJS Kesehatan
- Focus: Provides universal health protection for all Indonesians, covering medical services from routine check-ups to intensive hospital care. Aims to ensure access to adequate health services for all levels of society
- Target Participants: All Indonesian citizens, whether employed or not. Includes various categories such as "Bukan Pekerja" (BP), "Pekerja Bukan Penerima Upah" (PBPU), "Penerima Bantuan Iuran Jaminan Kesehatan" (PBI JK), and "Pekerja Penerima Upah" (PPU) from local governments
- Benefits: Focuses on health services, covering medical expenses for participants. Includes doctor consultations, medical procedures, and hospitalization
- Contributions: Financed by monthly contributions paid by participants
- Management Authority: Managed directly by the Indonesian government. Accountable directly to the President of Indonesia
- Legal Basis: Based on Law Number 40 of 2004 regarding the National Social Security System. Governed by Law Number 24 of 2011 concerning Social Security Organizing Bodies
- Operational Start Daten: Started operating on 1st January, 2014. Formerly known as PT Asuransi Kesehatan (Askes)
- Participant Number Format: 13 digits.
- Key Objectivet: To provide access to adequate health services
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan
- Focus: Offers protection for workers against employment-related risks, such as work accidents, disabilities, and retirement. Aims to provide economic security to workers who experience accidents, job loss, or retirement
- Target Participants: Specifically for Indonesian workers. Encompasses "Penerima Upah" (PU), Indonesian Migrant Workers, "Bukan Penerima Upah" (BPU), and those in the Construction Services sector
- Benefits: Focuses on social security for workers, including cash benefits upon retirement or protection in the event of a work accident. Provides benefits such as Jaminan Kecelakaan Kerja (JKK), Jaminan Kehilangan Pekerjaan (JKP), Jaminan Hari Tua (JHT), Jaminan Pensiun (JP), and Jaminan Kematian (JKM)
- Contributions: Supported by monthly contributions from both workers and companies
- Management Authority: Managed directly by the Indonesian government. Accountable directly to the President of Indonesia
- Legal Basis:Governed by Law Number 24 of 2011 concerning Social Security Organizing Bodies
- Operational Start Date: Started operating on 1st July, 2015. Evolved from PT Jamsostek (Persero)
- Participant Number Format: 11 digits
- Key Objectivee: To provide adequate protection to workers when risks occur in the workplace and after the end of their employment
Types of BPJS Security for Employees
The advantages of registering for BPJS (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial) are significant, offering both healthcare access and financial security.
BPJS Kesehatan (Healthcare)
- Ensures access to quality healthcare services for all Indonesian citizens.
- Covers medical treatment at designated healthcare facilities, with costs covered by BPJS, potentially only requiring a small co-payment fee.
- Covers basic health protection needs, including treatment for diseases and accidents.
- Offers disease screening to detect potential health issues early.
BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Employment/Social Security)
- Provides social security programs for Indonesian workers, including work accident insurance, death insurance, old-age insurance, and pension insurance.
- Protects the welfare and rights of Indonesian workers, both formal and non-formal.
- Provides financial security for the future through options to withdraw accumulated funds.

- Old Age Security: 3.7% (paid by employer), 2% (paid by employee)
- Pension Security: 2% (paid by employer), 1% (paid by employee)
- Death Insurance: 0.3% (paid by employer)
