Indonesia Visa Policy 2026: Short-Term e-Visas, Visa on Arrival and Entry Requirements

Indonesia Visa Policy 2026: Short-Term e-Visas, Visa on Arrival and Entry Requirements

Indonesia’s immigration system in 2026 offers several routes for international visitors, from visa-free entry and Visa on Arrival (VoA) to single-entry, multiple-entry and longer-term residence visas. The appropriate option depends on your nationality, purpose of travel and intended length of stay.

For Foreign nationals, understanding the rules before departure is more than an administrative step. Immigration approval is ultimately determined at the point of entry, even where a visa has already been issued.

Why Should Foreigners Understand Visa Requirements?

Indonesia’s visa framework separates tourism from business, employment, investment, family residence and other activities. The official immigration system currently lists categories including visa-free visits, Visa on Arrival, single-entry visit visas, multiple-entry visit visas, work visas, investor visas, family visas, repatriation visas and Second Home Visas.

Selecting the wrong category can create problems at the border or during your stay. A tourist visa, for example, should not be treated as permission to undertake employment in Indonesia.

Foreign nationals should therefore check their nationality, permitted activities, required documents and length of stay before booking their trip.

Understanding Visa-Free Entry to Indonesia

Indonesia provides Bebas Visa Kunjungan (BVK), or visa-free visit facilities, to nationals of selected countries and territories.

The current official immigration list includes 17 countries and territories, including Brunei Darussalam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Chile, Ecuador, Morocco, Peru, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Papua New Guinea and Timor-Leste.

Visa-free entry is separate from the VoA programme. Eligibility, permitted activities and stay conditions should be checked before travel, as these arrangements can change through government policy.

Visa-Free Entry List: Eligible Countries and Terms

Foreigners eligible for visa-free entry should not assume that every visit purpose is covered. The facility is intended for specific permitted activities under the relevant immigration rules.

For a longer holiday, business activity, investment research or another purpose outside the scope of visa-free entry, travellers may need to select a different visa category.

Indonesia also maintains a calling visa mechanism for certain nationalities. The current official list includes Afghanistan, Guinea, Israel, Cameroon, Liberia, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea and Somalia. Applicants from these countries require prior immigration clearance before a visa can be issued.

Visa on Arrival (e-VoA) and Electronic Visa on Arrival Indonesia

For eligible travellers, the B1 Visa on Arrival offers an efficient way to apply for Indonesia for short-term tourism. Travellers can obtain an initial stay of 30 days to 60 days, depending on whether they use the extension facility.

Indonesia also offers the Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VoA), allowing eligible travellers to register and complete their application online before travelling. Applicants can submit their details, upload the required documents and make the visa payment electronically through the official evisa system.

The standard B1 VoA provides an initial 30-day stay and can generally be extended once for another 30 days. Travellers seeking a longer stay should note that the extension to 180 days does not apply to the standard B1 VoA and may require a different visa category.

What Visa Should You Choose for a Longer Stay?

Indonesia also offers other options, including the C1 Single Entry Tourist Visa, C2 Business Visa, D1 Multiple Entry Tourist Visa and D2 Multiple Entry Business Visa, depending on the traveller’s purpose and circumstances.

The C1 Visa is a single-entry tourist visa, while the D1 Visa is a multiple-entry tourist visa. Business travellers may consider the C2 or D2, depending on the frequency and nature of their visits. Other categories exist for pre-investment, media, cultural, sports and specialised professional activities.

Foreign nationals planning to work, invest or reside in Indonesia for the longer term should consider the relevant work, investor, family, repatriation or Second Home visa rather than relying on a short-term visitor visa.

Visa Requirements for Indonesian Citizens Travelling Abroad

Indonesia’s visa policy also operates from the other side of the border: Indonesian citizens travelling overseas are subject to the entry rules imposed by their destination country.

Visa requirements can vary according to nationality, passport type, travel purpose, length of stay and bilateral arrangements. An Indonesian passport holder should therefore check the destination country’s official immigration or embassy guidance before departure.

Visa Processing: How to Apply for an Indonesian Visa

Many Indonesian visa applications can now be submitted electronically through the official immigration system.

The process generally involves selecting the appropriate visa category, preparing the required documents, completing the online application, paying the applicable government fee and waiting for the relevant approval.

For e-VoA applicants, the approved document should match the passport details exactly. Indonesia’s immigration system states that processed e-VoA information cannot be changed and that a mismatch with the passport can invalidate the visa and require a new application.

Because requirements differ considerably between visa categories, applicants should check the latest official requirements before submitting an application.

Processing Indonesia Visa Online

  1. Apply online through evisa.imigrasi.go.id
  2. Submit document requirements and continue the application process with payment after approval
  3. Aeceive e-visa through your e-mail
  4. Save the approved visa document and show it upon your arrival in Indonesia

Processing Indonesia Visa Offline

Indonesia no longer processes standard pre-arranged visas (like tourist or business visas) through purely offline or walk-in counters at immigration offices. All standard applications must go through the official digital portal. However, extension and conversion for Short Term and Long Term Visas (KITAS/KITAP) which require biometric verification is still subject to onshore application.

Indonesia’s Visa Extension and Renewal Procedures

Extension rules depend on the visa category. For example, a B1 Visa on Arrival provides an initial 30-day stay and may be extended once for another 30 days.

Other visit visas have their own extension or validity rules, while visa-free entry generally operates under different conditions.

Important notes: Applicants should begin any extension process before the current permission expires. Remaining in Indonesia after the authorised stay can result in overstay penalties and other immigration consequences.

How Strict Are Indonesia’s Entry Policies for Foreign Travellers?

Indonesia’s immigration system combines simplified digital applications with strict border controls.

The fact that a traveller has obtained a visa does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers may assess the traveller’s documents, purpose of visit and compliance history before granting admission.

Indonesia also limits e-VoA entry to designated airports and ports. The official list currently includes major gateways such as Soekarno-Hatta, Ngurah Rai Bali, Juanda, Kualanamu and Lombok International Airport, as well as selected seaports.

For international visitors, the practical lesson is straightforward: obtain the right visa, ensure your documents are accurate and make sure your activities match the visa you hold.
