Indonesia is well known for their exports. There are at least ten main products that are consistently produced for export, including shrimp, coffee, palm oil, cacao, rubber and rubber products, textile and textile products, footwear, electronics, motor vehicle components, and furniture.
If you have a local or foreign-owned (PMA) and seeking to send the goods abroad, there are several required licenses you need to acquire in order to comply with Indonesia’s export/import regulations.
There are two categories for exporters in Indonesia which require different licenses and treatments to be able to export from Indonesia.
Import License
- Definition: A permit required to bring goods into Indonesia.
- Types of Licenses: General Import License (API-U), Producer Import License (API-P), Limited Import License (API-T)
- Main Authority: Issued by the Ministry of Trade (MoT).
- Business Identification: Requires a Business Identification Number (NIB), which also serves as an API.
- Additional Licenses Needed: For certain goods, additional licenses may be required: - Importer Registration License - Import Approval License for producers.
- Customs Registration: Mandatory registration with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
- Documentation Required: - Business registration certificate - Taxpayer identification number (NPWP) - Financial statements - Additional certificates depending on goods (e.g., health, safety).
- Compliance Requirements: Must comply with customs laws and regulations, including declaring all imported goods.
Export License
- Definition: A permit required to send goods out of Indonesia.
- Types of Licenses: Export License
- Main Authority: Issued by the Ministry of Trade (MoT).
- Business Identification: Requires a Business Identification Number (NIB).
- Additional Licenses Needed: May require specific licenses based on the type of goods being exported.
- Customs Registration: Mandatory registration with the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
- Documentation Required:- Business registration certificate - Taxpayer identification number (NPWP) - Export documentation specific to goods.
- Compliance Requirements: Must comply with customs laws and regulations, ensuring all exported goods meet standards.
How to start an Indonesian export company
Setting up an export business involves several requirements; the initial step is forming a legal entity. You have the option to create different types of legal entities, like a CV, firm, PT, and cooperative.
It’s important to establish your company the right way. In order to export from Indonesia, it is necessary for an exporter to have a Taxpayer Identification Number (NPWP). Aside from that, securing the necessary business licenses is also required.
- License for Trading Business (SIUP) granted by the Ministry of Trade
- Industrial License from the Ministry of Industry.
- Domestic Investment Business License (PMDN) or Foreign Investment (PMA) issued by the Ministry of Investment (BKPM).
- Export Identity Number (APE).
